The development and use of product configurators has been highlighted as one of the more important IT enabled technologies to facilitate the realisation of mass customisation. However, the integration of these technologies into day to day business operations is complicated by the proliferation of configuration capabilities across a number of types of IT applications. This paper seeks to address the challenges of product configuration in an assemble-to-order environment via an automotive case study. The purpose of the paper is to highlight a number of configuration gaps and propose an approach to enable an integrated approach for the consolidation of configuration across a number of business domains in the context of an assembly-to-order environment. We call this new area of enterprise software Configuration Lifecycle Management (CLM).
