During a survey into the productivity of White Fulani cattle in Nigeria it was necessary to assess their bodily condition. Direct weighing or the use of a heart girth tape (Ross, 1958) do not adequately define the condition of the animal. Russell et al (1969) described a semi-objective method for assessing the back body fat in live sheep.
