Update on Vaccine-Derived Poliovirus Outbreaks — Democratic Republic of the Congo and Horn of Africa, 2017–2018

For both countries, longer periods of surveillance are needed before interruption of cVDPV transmission can be inferred, and the primary challenge to interrupting transmission is the residence of >300,000 children in areas that are inaccessible for vaccination activities.

Overcoming ongoing challenges to interruption of WPV transmission globally will require sustained programmatic enhancements, including improving the quality of supplementary immunization activities (SIAs) to interrupt transmission in Afghanistan and Pakistan and to prevent WPV exportation to polio-free countries.

Outbreak of Poliomyelitis in Hispaniola Associated with Circulating Type 1 Vaccine-Derived Poliovirus

An outbreak of paralytic poliomyelitis occurred in the Dominican Republic and Haiti during 2000–2001 and was associated with the circulation of a derivative of the type 1 OPV strain, probably originating from a single OPV dose given in 1998–1999.
