Response to back-to-back outbreaks of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 in two nomadic pastoralist settlements in Oti Region, Ghana-2019

Three rounds of monovalent OPV vaccination campaigns for children under 5 years of age in the districts and region as well as countrywide IPV vaccination campaign for poliovirus type 2 naïve cohort were conducted to identify risk factors and implement control and preventive measures.

An outbreak of paralytic poliomyelitis occurred in the Dominican Republic and Haiti during 2000–2001 and was associated with the circulation of a derivative of the type 1 OPV strain, probably originating from a single OPV dose given in 1998–1999.

Israel was certified as polio-free country in June 2002, but wild-type polio virus ₁ (WPV₁) was isolated initially from routine sewage samples collected between 7 and 13 April 2013 in two cities in the Southern district, and WPV-specific analysis of samples indicated WPV⁁ introduction into that area in early February 2013.
