In the Southern Ocean, breeding populations of several albatross species are decreasing (Gales 1993), due primarily to capture on fisheries’ longlines; conservative calculations estimate 44,000 albatrosses are killed annually south of 30°S (Brothers 1991). At Bird Island, in the South Atlantic Ocean, the breeding population of wandering albatrosses (Diomedea exulans) has decreased by 1.0% per annum since 1961, due to reduced rates of recruitment and adult survival (Croxall et al. 1990).
