Over the last decade there has been a growing interest in `conceptual modeling' for simulation. This is signified by a greater intensity of research and volume of papers on the topic. What is becoming apparent, however, is that when it comes to conceptual modeling there are quite different views and opinions. These differences may be beneficial for creating a debate that takes the field forward, but they can also lead to confusion. The purpose of this panel is for leading researchers to…

Figures and Tables from this paper

Loughborough University Institutional Repository A tutorial on simulation conceptual modeling
TLDR
The definition, requirements and approach to conceptual modeling are explored, the role of conceptual modeling in the simulation project life-cycle is identified, and the purpose and benefits of a conceptual model are discussed.
A TUTORIAL ON SIMULATION CONCEPTUAL MODELING
TLDR
The definition, requirements and approach to conceptual modeling are explored, the role of conceptual modeling in the simulation project life-cycle is identified, and the purpose and benefits of a conceptual model are discussed.
Conceptual Models in Simulation Studies: Making it Explicit
TLDR
This work identifies a set of products, which includes research question, data, and requirements, and defines relations and properties of these products and shows how the formal structuring of the conceptual model assists in building a simulation model.
Conceptual Models and Their Foundations
TLDR
Three notions of conceptual model are introduced in this paper: light, slim, and concise versions of the notion of Conceptual model.
Conceptual modelling for simulation: Progress and grand challenges
TLDR
Over the last 10 years, there has been significant activity on some research themes, especially conceptual modelling frameworks and conceptual model representation, but there remain, however, many underexplored and unexplored themes as well as some emerging themes.
The triptych of conceptual modeling
TLDR
A signature of conceptual models for their characterization is proposed, which allows a clear distinction from other types of models, and an approach that classifies conceptual models as a link between the dimension of linguistic terms and the encyclopedic dimension of notions is proposed.
Panel - Towards Conceptual Modeling for Hybrid Simulation: Setting the Scene
TLDR
The purpose of this panel is to initiate a discussion about conceptual modelling in HS, with the view to identifying improvements and needs for further research in this area.
PANEL-TOWARDS CONCEPTUAL MODELING FOR HYBRID SIMULATION: SETTING THE SCENE
A recent review paper of hybrid simulation modelling has identified that conceptual modelling is one of the least developed stages in the modelling lifecycle. Admittedly, it is generally accepted
PANEL: EDUCATION ON SIMULATION MODEL SIMPLIFICATION – BEYOND RULES OF THUMB
TLDR
The motivation for the panel, and panelists’ "positions" about the way forward for education on simulation model simplification are presented.

Conceptual modelling for simulation Part I: definition and requirements
TLDR
The meaning of conceptual modelling and the requirements of a conceptual model are discussed, and a conceptual modelling framework is proposed due to a paucity of advice on how to design a conceptual models.
Panel discussion: Education on conceptual modeling for simulation - challenging the art
This panel seeks to initiate a discussion within the modeling and simulation community about the way we teach conceptual modeling for simulation with the view of bringing about improvements. The

TLDR
This tutorial defines a set of terminology that helps to frame the conceptual modeling task, the role of conceptual modeling in the simulation project life-cycle, the requirements for a good conceptual model are identified, and a framework that guides the activity of conceptual modeled is described.
Conceptual Modeling for Discrete-Event Simulation
Bringing together an international group of researchers involved in military, business, and health modeling and simulation, Conceptual Modeling for Discrete-Event Simulation presents a comprehensive
Ontology for Modeling and Simulation
TLDR
What makes an ontology different in Modeling and Simulation (M&S) from other disciplines is established, vis-a-vis, the necessity to capture a conceptual model of a system in an explicit, unambiguous, and machine readable form.
Modelling and Simulation: Exploring Dynamic System Behaviour
This textbook presents a practical introduction to the fundamental aspects of modelling and simulation. It provides the necessary foundations both for those wishing to learn about this methodology
Accomplishing reuse with a simulation conceptual model
TLDR
This paper presents how a CM developed for a COI can assist in reuse for the design of any type of large-scale complex M&S application in that COI.

TLDR
This tutorial shows how to use UML class diagrams and BPMN process models at all three levels of model-driven simulation engineering: for making conceptual simulation models, for making platform-independent simulation design models, and forMaking platform-specific, executable simulation models.
Models, Abstractions and Phases in Multi-Agent Based Simulation
TLDR
This analysis of the levels that compound a simulation and that constitute different kinds of abstraction suggests some answers to the objections that are often directed towards the use of simulation in scientific practice but also underlines some criticalities in this process.
