We report the concentrations of scheduled prescription drugs in blood samples from people arrested in Sweden for driving under the influence of drugs (DUID). The investigation covered a 2 year period 2004 (N = 7052 cases) and 2005 (N = 7759 cases) and was prompted by recent legislation stipulating zero-concentration limits in blood for controlled substances. However, prescription drugs are exempt from the zero-limit law provided that the medication was being used in accordance with a doctor's…

The Frequency of Drugs Among Danish Drivers Before and After the Introduction of Fixed Concentration Limits
- MedicineTraffic injury prevention
- 2010
The number of traffic cases investigated for substances other than ethanol were consistently low, in the range of 200 to 300 per year during the period from 1997 to 2006, but after the introduction of fixed concentration limits in 2007 a 5-fold increase was seen already in 2008.

- 2011
An increase in the number of DUI cases showing combined use of benzodiazepines and sedative-hypnotics with amphetamines in particular was apparent after zero tolerance legislation and the introduction in 2005 of an effective on-site screening device for the stimulant.

Concentrations of Diazepam and Nordiazepam in 1000 Blood Samples From Apprehended Drivers—Therapeutic Use or Abuse of Anxiolytics?
- MedicineJournal of pharmacy practice
- 2013
The correlation between D and ND concentrations in blood was statistically significant (r = .58, P < .001), as expected for a parent drug and its primary metabolite, however, the frequency distributions were markedly skewed to the right.
Comparison of drug concentrations measured in roadside surveys and in seriously injured drivers in Belgium.
- MedicineDrug testing and analysis
- 2013
Significant differences were found in the distribution of concentrations for opioids, benzodiazepines, and Z-drugs, while in the seriously injured drivers study most concentrations were therapeutic, in the roadside survey most were infratherapeutic.

This paper reviews multianalyte single-stage and tandem gas or liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS or LC-MS) procedures for the screening, identification, and validated quantification of such drugs in blood that have been reported since 2003.

Gamma-hydroxybutyrate concentrations in the blood of impaired drivers, users of illicit drugs, and medical examiner cases.
- MedicineJournal of analytical toxicology
- 2007
Gamma-hydroxybutyrate was determined in blood samples from impaired drivers, people arrested for petty drug offenses (non-traffic cases), and GHB-related deaths and the typical signs of drug influence noted by the arresting police officers included sedation, agitation, slurred speech, irrational behaviour, jerky movements, and spitting.
Analysis of the prevalence of medicines and psychoactive substances among drivers in the material of the Department of Forensic Medicine at the Medical University of Bialystok.
- MedicineAdvances in clinical and experimental medicine : official organ Wroclaw Medical University
- 2014
In the group of psychoactive substances most often used, either alone or in combination with other agents, there were tetrahydrocannabinols, whose high percentage of positive results in drivers stopped for a roadside control may be explained by commissioning studies on early screening.

Sweden's zero-concentration limit has done nothing to reduce DUID or deter the typical offender because recidivism is high in this population of individuals (40–50%).

The combined influences of time delay, LOQ of the method, and the pharmacokinetic properties of the drug make it very difficult to obtain conclusive proof of heroin use from the analysis of a blood sample, but the Swedish police strive to obtain urine samples from individuals suspected for driving under the influence of drugs (DUID).
