We study the relation between the density profiles of dark matter halos and their mass assembly histories using a statistical sample of halos in a high-resolution N-body simulation of the ΛCDM cosmology. For each halo at z = 0, we identify its merger history tree and determine concentration parameters cvir for all progenitors, thus providing a structural merger tree for each halo. We fit the mass accretion histories by a universal function with one parameter, the formation epoch ac, defined…
Concentrations of dark haloes emerge from their merger histories
The concentration parameter is a key characteristic of a dark matter halo that conveniently connects the halo’s present-day structure with its assembly history. Using ‘Dark Sky’, a suite of
Assembly history and structure of galactic cold dark matter haloes
We use the Aquarius simulation series to study the imprint of assembly history on the structure of Galaxy-mass cold dark matter haloes. Our results confirm earlier work regarding the influence of
Formation times, mass growth histories and concentrations of dark matter haloes
We develop a simple model for estimating the mass growth histories of dark matter halos. The model is based on a t to the formation time distribution, where formation is dened as the earliest time
Halo Profiles and the Concentration–Mass Relation for a ΛCDM Universe
Profiles of dark matter-dominated halos at the group and cluster scales play an important role in modern cosmology. Using results from two very large cosmological N-body simulations, which increase
Dark matter halo abundances, clustering and assembly histories at high redshift
We use a suite of high-resolution N-body simulations to study the properties, abundance and clustering of high-mass haloes at high redshift, including their mass assembly histories and mergers. We
Mass accretion rates and histories of dark matter haloes
We use the extensive catalogue of dark matter haloes from the Millennium Simulation to investigate the statistics of the mass accretion histories (MAHs) and accretion rates of ∼500 000 haloes from
Are mergers responsible for universal halo properties
N-body simulations of cold dark matter (CDM) have shown that, in this hierarchical structure formation model, dark matter halo properties, such as the density profile, the phase-space density
Universal merger histories of dark‐matter haloes
We study merger histories of dark-matter haloes in a suite of N-body simulations that span different cosmological models. The simulated cases include the up-to-date Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy
Sensitivity of dark matter haloes to their accretion histories
We apply our recently proposed "quadratic genetic modification" approach to generating and testing the effects of alternative mass accretion histories for a single $\Lambda$CDM halo. The goal of the
A large amount of observations have constrained cosmological parameters and the initial density fluctuation spectrum to a very high accuracy. However, cosmological parameters change with time and the

Profiles of dark haloes: evolution, scatter and environment
We study dark-matter halo density profiles in a high-resolution N-body simulation of aCDM cosmology. Our statistical sample contains 5000 haloes in the range 10 11 10 14 h −1 M⊙ and the resolution
The Structure of cold dark matter halos
High resolution N-body simulations show that the density profiles of dark matter halos formed in the standard CDM cosmogony can be fit accurately by scaling a simple “universal” profile. Regardless
The mass function of dark matter haloes
We combine data from a number of N-body simulations to predict the abundance of dark haloes in cold dark matter (CDM) universes over more than four orders of magnitude in mass. A comparison of
A Universal Density Profile from Hierarchical Clustering
We use high-resolution N-body simulations to study the equilibrium density profiles of dark matter halos in hierarchically clustering universes. We find that all such profiles have the same shape,
Density profiles of dark matter haloes: diversity and dependence on environment
We study the outer density profiles of dark matter haloes predicted by a generalized secondary infall model and observed in a dissipationless cosmological simulation of a low-density flat cold dark
Formation and Structure of Halos in a Warm Dark Matter Cosmology
Using high-resolution cosmological N-body simulations, we study how the density profiles of dark matter halos are affected by the filtering of the density power spectrum below a given scale length
Merger rates in hierarchical models of galaxy formation
We present an analytical description of the merging of virialized haloes which is applicable to any hierarchical model in which structure grows via gravitational instability. The formulae are an
Evaluating approximations for halo merging histories
We study the merging history of dark matter haloes in N-body simulations and semi-analytical ‘merger trees’ based on the extended Press–Schechter (EPS) formalism. The main focus of our study is the
Resolving the Structure of Cold Dark Matter Halos
We examine the effects of mass resolution and force softening on the density profiles of cold dark matter halos that form within cosmological N-body simulations. As we increase the mass and force
Resolving the Structure of Cold Dark Matter Halos
We present results of a convergence study in which we compare the density profiles of cold dark matter halos simulated with varying mass and force resolutions. We show that although increasing the
