Computer vision experiments in crowdsourced astronomy

Abstract

Structure-from-motion (SfM) is a computer vision method that enables the recreation of a 3D object by combining images of that object from many different angles. We apply SfM techniques to images of Jupiter crowdsourced from the amateur astronomy website AstroBin. Simple SfM techniques are able to successfully recreate the 3D structure of Jupiter, despite noisy and messy data. This method shows potential promise for combining arbitrary amateur data from the internet in making astronomical observations.
