The mechanism of nerve cell transport, the process by which substances made in a nerve cell body are moved long distances along a nerve cell process or axon, remains a major unsolved problem in biomedicine. Using a light microscope with the recently developed video hanced contrast method with interference contrast optics, it is possible to detect small subecllular structures down to 25 nm in size, and organelle traffic within axons can be visualized.
