Abstract The paper concerns the reconstruction of part programs produced by commercial packages, with the aim of providing general methodologies for the reduction of machining residence times in multi-axis machine tools. It is shown how the part program can be automatically segmented into discrete units, the sequence of which may be altered using a specially developed generalized computer optimization package to yield the minimum machining residence time.
