Architectural design, particularly in large scale masterplanning projects, has yet to fully undergo the computational revolution experienced by other design-led industries such as automotive and aerospace. These industries use computational frameworks to undertake automated design analysis and design space exploration. However, within the Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industries we find no such computational platforms. This precludes the rapid analysis needed for…

Computational Design Synergy: Stimulation Through Simulation
The novel ability to capture and compute large amounts of data referring to aspects that are “theory poor, but data rich” enables synergetic systemic solutions that are more appropriate and timely, yet scalable.
Crowdsourcing with online quantitative design analysis
Management and visualisation of non-linear history of polygonal 3D models
A domain-specific non-linear revision control system 3D Repo is built around a NoSQL database to enable asynchronous editing similar to traditional VCSs, and constitutes a novel framework that demonstrates the feasibility of a domain- specific 3D version control.
Building a generic platform for big sensor data application
A sensor data platform “Concinnity” is provided which can take sensor data from collection to final product via a data repository and workflow system to enable rapid development of applications built on sensor data using data fusion and the integration and composition of models to form novel workflows.
Concinnity: A Generic Platform for Big Sensor Data Applications
Concinnity takes sensor data from collection to final product via a cloud-based data repository and easy-to-use workflow system and supports rapid development of applications built on sensor data using data fusion and the integration and composition of models to form novel workflows.

Component-oriented decomposition for multidisciplinary design optimization in building design
A comparison of multidisciplinary design, analysis and optimization processes in the building construction and aerospace industries
Advancement in computer-based product modeling and analysis tools now allows diverse disciplines to simulate product performance in the early stages of Architecture, Engineering and Construction
Multicriteria Optimization of Paneled Building Envelopes Using Ant Colony Optimization
This paper presents a proof-of-concept computational design and optimization tool aimed at facilitating the design of optimized panelized building envelopes for lighting performance and cost criteria using a multicriteria ant colony optimization method using Pareto filtering.
This paper demonstrates a new tool for the integrated modelling of urban energy systems. Energy is vital to the delivery of urban services and its role can be considered at many stages in the urban
Extraction and analysis methodology for supporting complex sustainable design
The paper discusses the use of a methodology that seeks to support the decision making process and design optimization for complex sustainable designs based upon automatically studying the relations between design parameters so that their interdependencies can be obtained and sensitivities established.
Multidisciplinary process integration and design optimization of a classroom building
How PIDO can enable orders of magnitude improvement in the number of design cycles typically achieved in practice is demonstrated, and PIDO’s potential to improve AEC MDO processes and products is assessed.

Intelligent Design Objects (IDO): a cognitive approach for performance-based design
A novel approach for design is proposed, where computation is used to reach most suitable solutions for conflicting goals and designers and decision makers have great certainty about the satisfaction of their goals and are able to concentrate on second order aspects they were not aware of prior to the execution.
Site Layout Planning for Daylight and Sunlight. A guide to good practice (2nd edition)
How coppicing can enable new (and existing) woodland owners to be active and productive in a relatively short timescale and how this can become part of a lifestyle is described.
3D revision control framework
This framework supports concurrent asynchronous 3D editing of models and tracking of multiple revisions so that they can be integrated at a later date and is built around a NoSQL database, hence avoids the constraints of file based storage.
