In psychotherapy, the patient-provider interaction contains the treatment's active ingredients. However, the technology for analyzing the content of this interaction has not fundamentally changed in decades, limiting both the scale and specificity of psychotherapy research. New methods are required to "scale up" to larger evaluation tasks and "drill down" into the raw linguistic data of patient-therapist interactions. In the current article, we demonstrate the utility of statistical text…

Content Coding of Psychotherapy Transcripts Using Labeled Topic Models
TLDR
The labeled latent Dirichlet allocation (L-LDA) model has the potential to be an objective, scalable method for accurate automated coding of psychotherapy sessions that perform better than comparable discriminative methods at session-level coding and can also predict fine-grained codes.
Using topic models to identify clients' functioning levels and alliance ruptures in psychotherapy.
Computerized natural language processing techniques can analyze psychotherapy sessions as texts, thus generating information about the therapy process and outcome and supporting the scaling-up of
Uncovering the linguistic characteristics of psychotherapy: a computational approach to measure therapist language timing, responsiveness, and consistency
Although individual psychotherapy is generally effective for a range of mental health conditions, little is known about the moment-to-moment language use of effective therapists. Increased access to
"Rate My Therapist": Automated Detection of Empathy in Drug and Alcohol Counseling via Speech and Language Processing
TLDR
Using speech and language processing methods, it is possible to generate accurate predictions of provider performance in psychotherapy from audio recordings alone and can support large-scale evaluation of psychotherapy for dissemination and process studies.
A scoping review of machine learning in psychotherapy research
TLDR
Overall, the current applications of ML in psychotherapy research demonstrated a range of possible benefits for indications of treatment process, adherence, therapist skills and treatment response prediction, as well as ways to accelerate research through automated behavioral or linguistic process coding.
Language style matching in psychotherapy: An implicit aspect of alliance.
TLDR
In an attempt to operationalize an implicit aspect of the therapeutic alliance, the use of the innovative, objective, and time-efficient analysis of language style matching (LSM) is proposed.
What text mining analysis of psychotherapy records can tell us about therapy process and outcome
Increasing demand for mental health treatment and the transfer of a large portion of our lives online has led to the development of a growing range of computerized psychological therapy programmes.
Linguistic analysis of patients with mood and anxiety disorders during cognitive behavioral therapy
TLDR
Depressed patients used more words related to sadness when compared to “depression” and “anxiety”, which points to differences in language use for different diagnostic groups and may help to improve diagnostic procedures or language-driven interventions which enhance therapists’ attention to patients’ verbal behavior.
How to Identify Hot Topics in Psychology Using Topic Modeling
Latent topics and trends in psychological publications were examined to identify hotspots in psychology. Topic modeling was contrasted with a classification-based scientometric approach in order to
Understanding Therapeutic Change Process Research Through Multilevel Modeling and Text Mining
TLDR
It was possible to relate text-information obtained through text mining to multi-leveled TCPR outcomes (using a MLM), which can be helpful to obtain change processes, which is also the main challenge for TCPR.

Topic models: a novel method for modeling couple and family text data.
TLDR
This article presents an alternative method for analyzing text data called topic models (Steyvers & Griffiths, 2006), which has not yet been applied within couple and family psychology and a nontechnical introduction to topic models is provided, highlighting how these models can be used for text exploration and indexing.
Rethinking the paradigms that inform behavioral treatment research for substance use disorders.
TLDR
The addiction treatment research field is coming up against the limitations of the psychotherapy technology model as the dominant paradigm guiding treatment research, so it is important for addiction treatment researchers to explore alternative conceptualizations and methodologies in order to understand more clearly how treatment works.
Linguistic Analysis of Affective Speech in Psychotherapy: A case grammar approach
The Computer Assisted Language Analysis System (CALAS) was used to examine the relationship of various linguistic measures to outcome measures in high and low verbalized affect segments of 32
Alliance in individual psychotherapy.
TLDR
A research synthesis of the relation between alliance and the outcomes of individual psychotherapy covered over 200 research reports based on 190 independent data sources, covering more than 14,000 treatments.
Treatment expectancies, patient alliance, and outcome: further analyses from the National Institute of Mental Health Treatment of Depression Collaborative Research Program.
TLDR
Patients who expect treatment to be effective tend to engage more constructively in session, which helps bring about symptom reduction, and the hypothesis that the link between treatment expectancies and outcome would be mediated by patients' contribution to the alliance was supported.
An approach to psychotherapy change process research: introduction to the special section.
This special section has a dual focus. One is on psychotherapy change research. The other is to explicate an approach to develop a program of research that builds on 2 aspects of scientific
Automated method of content analysis: A device for psychotherapy process research
TLDR
The content analysis produced by ACASM is indistinguishable from that performed by human coders, and coders’ agreement and coder-ACASM agreement on the task of semantic classification have the same magnitude.
National Institute of Mental Health Treatment of Depression Collaborative Research Program. General effectiveness of treatments.
TLDR
There was limited evidence of the specific effectiveness of interpersonal psychotherapy and none for cognitive behavior therapy, but Superior recovery rates were found for both interpersonal Psychotherapy and imipramine plusclinical management, as compared with placebo plus clinical management.
The association of therapist empathy and synchrony in vocally encoded arousal.
TLDR
Novel indicators of therapist empathy may have implications for the study of MI process as well as the training of therapists generally, and initial evidence for an objective and nonobtrusive method for assessing therapist performance is provided.
