We analyzed picoeukaryote assemblages at a French coastal site of the English Channel by sequencing cloned eukaryotic 18S rRNA genes in eight genetic libraries constructed from environmental samples (seven coastal, one estuarine) collected at different periods of the year. Eight hundred clones were examined by amplified restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) using the restriction enzyme HaeIII. The coverage value calculated from the relative distribution of RFLP types was low…
Picoeukaryotic Plankton Diversity at the Helgoland Time Series Site as Assessed by Three Molecular Methods
TLDR
It is suggested that clone libraries should be made at weekly intervals if succession in the picoeukaryotic plankton community is to be monitored accurately and there appears to be an annual cycle with regard to species composition.
Genetic diversity of picoeukaryotes in a semi-enclosed harbour in the subtropical western Pacific Ocean
TLDR
Seasonal variations in picoeukaryote composition were more pronounced in the open sea libraries than in the semi-enclosed harbour libraries, and a differential spatial distribution of OTUs was observed between samples collected from the 2 sampling sites.
Genetic Diversity of Eukaryotic Microorganisms in Lake Taihu, a Large Shallow Subtropical Lake in China
TLDR
Canonical correspondence analysis suggested that the differences in eukaryotic microorganism community composition of in the six regions were partially related to trophic status, sediment resuspension, and top-down regulation by metazooplankton.
Composition and genetic diversity of picoeukaryotes in subtropical coastal waters as revealed by 454 pyrosequencing
TLDR
Diversity of picoeukaryotes was higher in an oligomesotrophic bay than in a eutrophic bay, and the total diversity was underestimated at a genetic difference of ⩽2%.
Succession and Regulation Factors of Small Eukaryote Community Composition in a Lacustrine Ecosystem (Lake Pavin)
TLDR
No seasonal reproducibility in temporal evolution of the small-eukaryote community was observed from 1 year to the next, and a strong top-down regulation of small eukaryotes by zooplankton by cladocerans at 5 m and copepods at 30 m was shown.
Diversity of picoeukaryotes at an oligotrophic site off the Northeastern Red Sea Coast
TLDR
The results indicate that the picoeukaryotic community in the northern Red Sea, despite its unique physiochemical conditions (i.e. increased temperatures, increased salinity, and high UV irradiance) does not differ vastly from its counterparts in other oligotrophic marine habitats.
Molecular Monitoring of Eukaryotic Plankton Diversity at Mulgeum and Eulsukdo in the Lower Reaches of the Nakdong River
TLDR
The cryptic species diversity including unreported phylotypes of Pirsonia (Stramenopiles) and Perkinsea (Alveolata) suggests that the molecular monitoring method can produce new informative biological data in monitoring the changes in the Nakdong River Mouth ecosystem.
Diversity of picoplanktonic prasinophytes assessed by direct nuclear SSU rDNA sequencing of environmental samples and novel isolates retrieved from oceanic and coastal marine ecosystems.
TLDR
A report of the overall diversity of picoeukaryotic prasinophytes reveals a group of ecologically important and diverse marine microorganims that are well represented by isolated cultures.
Genetic diversity of eukaryotic ultraphytoplankton in the Gulf of Naples during an annual cycle
TLDR
A striking result was the high hybridisation signal from the Chrysophyceae, which showed a preference for the summer months, and most of the sequences found in the clone libraries were not identical to available 16S rRNA gene sequences, indicating a high amount of hidden diversity for these algal classes.

Phylogenetic diversity of marine coastal picoplankton 16S rRNA genes cloned from the continental shelf off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina
TLDR
Overall, however, these data indicate that a limited number of as yet uncultured bacterioplankton lineages, related to those previously observed in the open ocean, can account for most cells in this coastal marine bacteriopLankton assemblage.
A molecular phylogenetic survey of sea-ice microbial communities (SIMCO).
TLDR
The findings of this investigation corroborated culture data indicating bacterial biodiversity increased in SIMCO displaying high levels of primary production, however the bacterial communities within SIMCO were highly heterogeneous at the genus/species-level between different samples.
Oceanic 18S rDNA sequences from picoplankton reveal unsuspected eukaryotic diversity
TLDR
35 full sequences of the small-subunit (18S) ribosomal RNA gene derived from a picoplanktonic assemblage collected at a depth of 75 m in the equatorial Pacific Ocean are analysed and show that there is a high diversity of picoeukaryotes.
Genetic diversity and molecular detection of three toxic dinoflagellate genera (Alexandrium, Dinophysis, and Karenia) from French coasts.
TLDR
The first results obtained on the biogeographical distribution of genotypes of these three toxic genera along the French coasts are presented, including Alexandrium species inside the tamarensis complex, D. acuminata complex and K. mikimotoi.
Abundance and diversity of prymnesiophytes in the picoplankton coμmunity from the equatorial Pacific Ocean inferred from 18S rDNA sequences
TLDR
Prymnesiophyte diversity and abundance in natural picoplankton communities is assessed, using a molecular approach, to establish the presence of several prymnesiaophyte lineages with no equivalent among cultivated species.
Benthic eukaryotic diversity in the Guaymas Basin hydrothermal vent environment
TLDR
By using sequence comparisons of PCR-amplified small subunit ribosomal RNAs, eukaryotic diversity in hydrothermal vent environments of Guaymas Basin in the Gulf of California is characterized and the adaptation to anoxic environments is evidenced by specific affinity of environmental sequences to aerotolerant anaerobic species in molecular trees.
The ecology of Paraphysomonas imperforata based on studies employing oligonucleotide probe identification in coastal water samples and enrichment cultures
TLDR
The results support the notion that enrichment cultivation of heterotrophic flagellates, and perhaps incubations in general, can select for species such as P. imperforata that may not be representative of nanoplanktonic protists that numerically dominate natural assemblages.
Levels of Bacterial Community Diversity in Four Arid Soils Compared by Cultivation and 16S rRNA Gene Cloning
TLDR
Levels of bacterial community diversity in two pinyon rhizosphere soil samples and two between-tree (interspace) soil samples are compared by analyzing 179 cultivated bacterial isolates and 801 16S rRNA genes amplified from extracted soil DNA.
Clade-Specific 16S Ribosomal DNA Oligonucleotides Reveal the Predominance of a Single Marine Synechococcus Clade throughout a Stratified Water Column in the Red Sea
TLDR
Clade-specific oligonucleotides for the marine Synechococcus genus were designed and their specificity was optimized and a predominance of genotypes representative of a single clade was found, and these genotypes were common among strains isolated into culture.
