Complications that compromised the final result developed in two-thirds of 36 patients with 38 fractures of the tibial shaft. Complications may stem from the severity of the original injury or from the management of the fracture. Late complications, e.g., delayed union, nonunion, and chronic infection, tend to be more serious than early complications. The most complicated tibial shaft fractures are open fractures.
