Both open cholecystectomy and laparoscopic cholecystectomy are highly safe and effective procedures for the treatment of patients with symptomatic cholelithiasis. Today, adverse outcomes after open cholecystectomy are largely limited to elderly patients with co-morbid conditions and complicated biliary tract disease.
