Complications were surveyed prospectively in 2,029 catheterizations performed on 1,483 patients from the 13 centers participating in the VA Cooperative Study on Valvular Heart Disease. Complications were reported in 6.9% of 1,559 preoperative procedures of which 2.6% were major and 0.2% fatal. Clinical predictors of complications were hypertension and the precatheterization diagnosis of aortic stenosis.
