  • Giant mitochondria were visualized in the human endometrial glandular cell and studied by means of serial sectioning techniques and high-voltage electron microscopy. Three-dimensional reconstruction techniques were employed to produce balsa wood models of the mitochondria. By these means it was shown that giant mitochondria are localized areas of swelling in exceedingly long and complex branched mitochondria of otherwise “conventional” diameter as seen on cross section.
