A straightforward and extremely efficient reverse chromosome painting technique is described which allows the rapid and unequivocal identification of any cytogenetically unclassifiable chromosome rearrangement. This procedure is used to determine the origin of unknown marker chromosomes found at prenatal diagnosis.
