AbstractMedical application of Panax ginseng was first found in “Shen-Nong Herbal Classic” around 200 AD Panax quinquefolium was first introduced in “Essential of Materia Medica” in 1694 in China. The most important bioactive components contained in P ginseng and P quinquefolium are ginseng saponins (GS). The contents of ginsenoside Rb1, Re, and Rd in P quinquefolium are higher than they are in P ginseng. In P ginseng, the contents of Rg1,Rb2, and Rc are higher than they are in P quinquefolium… Expand
Ginsenosides Derived from Asian (Panax ginseng), American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) and Potential Cytoactivity
Ginseng is a slow-growing, deciduous perennial plant that belongs to the Araliaceae family and the Panax genus. There are a variety of species but the two main types are Panax ginseng C.A MeyerExpand
Functional regulation of ginsenoside biosynthesis by RNA interferences of a UDP-glycosyltransferase gene in Panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolius.
TLDR
Cloned and identified a UDP-glycosyltransferase gene named Pq3-O-UGT2 from P. ginseng and P.quinquefolius, which indicated a close evolutionary relationship between the two plants. Expand
Pharmacology of Polysaccharides from Ginseng Species
In traditional Chinese medicine, Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer (PG) invigorates “qi” of kidney, spleen and lung, promotes body fluids production, calms the mind to promote intelligence, while P.Expand
Evaluation of antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities of less polar ginsenosides produced from polar ginsenosides by heat-transformation.
TLDR
The results suggest that less polar ginsenosides enriched fraction HPHF obtained from AG might be useful to develop new types of antibacterial substances and new skin care cosmetics for acne prevention and therapy. Expand
Enhancement of Minor Ginsenosides Contents and Antioxidant Capacity of American and Canadian Ginsengs (Panax quinquefolius) by Puffing
TLDR
Results suggest that puffing can be a promising novel technology for processing P. quinquefolius to achieve higher levels of minor ginsenosides and obtain value-added products. Expand
Comparison of Ginsenoside Components of Various Tissues of New Zealand Forest-Grown Asian Ginseng (Panax Ginseng) and American Ginseng (Panax Quinquefolium L.)
TLDR
Ginsenoside concentrations in different parts of ginsengs were varied and the fine roots contained the most abundant ginsenosides, not only in NZPG but also in NZPQ. Expand
Bioactive Proteins in Panax notoginseng Roots and Other Panax Species.
TLDR
The proteins present in P. notoginseng that have been identified are summarized, and compared with those from other Panax species with a similar structure or bioactivity are compared to conclude whether the proteins have any distinctive features. Expand
Chapter 50 – Chinese Ginseng
TLDR
It is suggested that continuous studies are necessary to improve the detail composition of the ginseng extract to facilitate the study of clinical efficacy of this valuable nutraceutical. Expand
Preparation of ginsenosides Rg3, Rk1, and Rg5-selectively enriched ginsengs by a simple steaming process
In this study, the red ginseng-specific bioactive ginsenosides Rg3, Rk1, and Rg5 were selectively enriched in ginseng prepared using a steaming and drying process. To achieve a selective increase inExpand
Pharmacokinetics of ginsenosides following repeated oral administration of red ginseng extract significantly differ between species of experimental animals.
TLDR
The choice of animal model should be the subject of careful consideration when exploring the pharmacology of RGE with specific focus on the plasma profile of an individual ginsenoside, suggesting the species-dependent difference in the gut metabolism and absorption of gINSenosides. Expand

Red American ginseng: ginsenoside constituents and antiproliferative activities of heat-processed Panax quinquefolius roots.
TLDR
The antiproliferative activities of red American ginseng are augmented when ginsenoside Rg3 is increased, and the activity of the extract from roots steaming for 2 h was greater than that of roots steamed for 1 h. Expand
Distribution and Proportion of Major Ginsenosides and Quality Control of Ginseng Products
More than 150 genuine ginseng samples,Panax quinquefolius L.,Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer,Panax notoginseng Burkill roots, leaves and different preparations have been analyzed by using RP-HPLC(HighExpand
Generation of ginsenosides Rg3 and Rh2 from North American ginseng.
TLDR
Using ESI-MS analysis, it was found that formation of Rg3 and Rh2, among other compounds, were a function of heating time and were breakdown products of the more abundant ginsenosides Rb1 and Rc. Expand
Metabolism of ginsenoside Re by human intestinal microflora and its estrogenic effect.
TLDR
It is suggested that the ginsenosides Rh1 and/or F1 may not be suitable substrates of intestinal bacteria, particularly Bacteroides JY-6, which showed the greatest estrogenic effect in human breast carcinoma MCF-7 cells. Expand
Influence of root age on the concentration of ginsenosides of American ginseng (Panax quinquefolium)
TLDR
It was found that ginseng harvested after only 3 yr contained lower amounts of ginsenosides than ginsENG harvested after 4‴s, and root weight increased with the age of the root. Expand
Ginsenoside content and variation among and within American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) populations.
TLDR
The results provide support for recent evidence that relative Rg1 to Re ginsenoside contents in American ginseng roots vary by region and that these differences are likely influenced more by genotype than environmental factors. Expand
