Sixty-seven dogs that showed signs of distress when separated from their owners (destructiveness, excessive vocalisation and house soiling) and hyperattachment were used in a randomised, blind trial to assess the potential value of a dog-appeasing pheromone in reducing the unacceptable behaviours. For ethical reasons, there was no placebo group and the effects of the pheromone were compared with the effects of clomipramine which is regularly used to treat this type of problem. The undesirable…
Clinical applications of pheromones in dogs
In dogs, six major sources of pheromones exist: the facial area, the pedal complex, the perianal complex, the genital complex and the mammary complex. In the prevention and treatment of canine
Efficacy of dog-appeasing pheromone (DAP) for ameliorating separation-related behavioral signs in hospitalized dogs.
TLDR
The results suggest that the use of DAP could decrease separation-induced anxiety, distress, and fear in inpatients, and possibly facilitate recovery in hospitalized dogs.
Efficacy of dog-appeasing pheromone in reducing behaviours associated with fear of unfamiliar people and new surroundings in newly adopted puppies
This study was designed to determine the potential value of dog-appeasing pheromone (DAP) in reducing behaviours associated with fear of unfamiliar people and new surroundings in puppies newly
Efficacy of dog-appeasing pheromone in reducing stress associated with social isolation in newly adopted puppies
TLDR
Signs of distress, particularly vocalisation, were significantly lower in the dap group on day 3 and throughout the rest of the study, and vocalisation during the night ceased significantly sooner in this group.
Evaluation of the efficacy of an appeasing pheromone diffuser product vs placebo for management of feline aggression in multi-cat households: a pilot study
TLDR
The cat-appeasing pheromone is a promising treatment for the management of aggression between housemate cats in multi-cat households via a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot trial of 45 multi- cat households.
Effects of dog-appeasing pheromones on anxiety and fear in puppies during training and on long-term socialization.
TLDR
DAP was useful in reducing anxiety and fear in puppies during puppy classes and resulted in improved socialization when compared with a placebo treatment, according to follow-up telephone surveys.
Pheromonatherapy: theory and applications
TLDR
Although there are reports of clinical efficacy of pheromones in non-companion animal species, including pigs and poultry, the use of peromone products has been studied most extensively in dogs and cats, and it is on these species that this article focuses.

Evaluation of clomipramine as an adjunct to behavioural therapy in the treatment of separation-related problems in dogs
TLDR
The typical signs of separation-related behaviour problems were not significantly affeced by treatment with clomipramine, but behavioural therapy on its own was highly effective in reducing behavioural problems.

Some pharmacological aspects of desmethylclomipramine.
TLDR
The N-desmethyl metabolites of imipramine and amitriptyline possess antidepressant activity in their own right, and plasma levels of the metabolite as well as those of the parent compound should be taken into account.
