Increased dietary intake of cholesterol has been found to lead to increased bile acid synthesis in rats in vivo (Wilson, 1964; Beher et al., 1970; Raicht et ul., 1975; Mathe & Chevallier, 1970). Hepatocytes isolated from cholesterol-fed rats and incubated in suspension, however, do not produce significantly more bile acid than cells from control animals (Botham & Boyd, 1983).
