}This study was designed to investigate the relationship between the cellular components of lung lavage fluid and the presence of airways disease and emphysema in resected lung specimens, primarily from current and ex-smokers. Since standard bronchopulmonary lavage cannot be performed on these specimens, an intrapulmonary lavage technique was developed and compared to the results of bronchoalveolar lavage performed prior to surgery on the lung or lobe opposite to the one resected. The specimen…

Comparison of inflammatory cells in bronchoalveolar fluid with those in the lumen and tissue peripheral airways and alveolar airspace
- Biology, MedicineLung

The data suggest that lavage does indeed sample the lower airways and alveolar spaces, and that such usage may well be justified.
Mast cells in the airway lumen and bronchial mucosa of patients with chronic bronchitis.

In order to evaluate the degree of mast cell infiltration and determine their granulation state in the airways of patients with chronic bronchitis, bronchoscopy was performed in 25 chronic Bronchoalveolar lavage and bronchial biopsies were examined using histochemical techniques.
Association between alveolar macrophage plasminogen activator activity and indices of lung function in young cigarette smokers.

Recent evidence suggests that connective tissue breakdown in the human lung leading to airway obstruction and emphysema involves proteinases expressed by neutrophils and macrophages that traffic to…
Activated T-lymphocytes and macrophages in bronchial mucosa of subjects with chronic bronchitis.

Evidence is provided for mononuclear cell infiltration and for T-cell activation in bronchial mucosa of subjects with chronic bronchitis, supporting the involvement of these cells in the pathogenesis of the disease.
Airway inflammation and peribronchiolar attachments in the lungs of non smokers, current and ex-smokers
- MedicineLung
- 2007
It is concluded that the cigarette smoking habit induces a stereotypical inflammatory response in the small airways that does not abate after smoking cessation, and appears to be independent of the presence or absence of emphysema, but related to destruction of the peribronchiolar alveolar attachments.

Airways inflammation in subjects with chronic bronchitis who have never smoked.
- Medicine, BiologyThorax

Clinically stable non-smokers with chronic bronchitis show no alterations of local immune components, oxidant burden, and free elastase-like activity in BAL fluids, while the content of elastases in phagocytic cells is increased, as in smokers.

Beneficial effects of N‐acetylcysteine and cysteine in stunned myocardium in perfused rat heart
- Biology, MedicineBritish journal of pharmacology
- 1991
It is demonstrated that NAC and Cys treatment before ischaemia and reperfusion can reduce myocardial stunning and this beneficial effect may be mainly due to their ability to preserve and enhance coronary flow during coronary occlusion and reperFusion and in part due to scavenging OH and/or replenishing intracellular glutathione.
Survival of patients with severe alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency with special reference to non-index cases.
- Medicine, BiologyThorax
- 1994
The prognosis of severe alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency is better than previously assumed and, although smoking is a major risk factor, the development of emphysema in patients with severe alpha1-antItrypsIn deficiency is multifactorial.
