Comparison of scientific impact expressed by the number of citations in different fields of science
@article{Podlubny2005ComparisonOS, title={Comparison of scientific impact expressed by the number of citations in different fields of science}, author={Igor Podlubny}, journal={Scientometrics}, year={2005}, volume={64}, pages={95-99} }
SummaryCitation distributions for 1992, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, and 2001, which were published in the 2004 report of the National Science Foundation, USA, are analyzed. It is shown that the ratio of the total number of citations of any two broad fields of science remains close to constant over the analyzed years. Based on this observation, normalization of total numbers of citations with respect to the number of citations in mathematics is suggested as a tool for comparing scientific impact…

The h -index has been successful in assessing the performance of scientists of the same field and at the same stage of their careers, and by appropriately scaling the discipline-dependence of h - index has also enabled comparison among those working in different disciplines, serving as a simplified, robust, intelligible measure.

Two normalised indicators in economics are applied, which are the most important indicators in bibliometrics: the mean normalised citation score (MNCS) and PPtop 10 %, which is the share of papers that belong to the 10% most cited papers in a certain subfield and time period.

This work single out six measures from the rather sparse literature, including Hirsch’s m-index, a time-scaled version of the h- index, and introduces new measures based on the idea of “citation acceleration,” which shows substantial promise for future use.
