This paper compares event-triggered and time-triggered concepts from the control theory point of view. For that purpose, the requirements of distributed control systems are summarized and advantages and disadvantages of both concepts are elaborated by hand of different criteria. These are, for instance, the ability to react to asynchronous events, the system design and scheduling, the synchronization problem, and the compensation of latency and jitter in the control loop.
