Endothelial cells (ECs) are very responsive to proinflammatory cytokines. ECs are stimulated by these substances to increase expression of cell surface adhesion molecules, leading to dramatically altered interactions with leukocytes. In these interactions, E-selectin, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) are suggested to play the most important role.
