An X-ray examination of the fibres produced by the silk-spinning organisms belonging to the orders Lepidoptera and Araneae has shown that there are at least five main types of fibroins recognizable by their X-ray diagrams. It is shown that probably all the fibroins are made up of anti-parallel pleated sheets of polypeptide chains, the difference between the fibroins being attributed to the variation in, and sequence of, the amino-acid residues composing the polypeptide chains.
