Cytolethal distending toxins (CDTs) constitute a family of bacterial proteins that enter eukaryotic cells with genotoxic activity leading to cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. CDTs are widespread, having been found in a variety of Gram-negative pathogens with a broad tissue tropism.
