To combine the benefits and compensate for the drawbacks of different optical amplifier types, a hybrid amplifier can be composed. The authors consider two most frequently used hybrid amplifiers that can provide better performance: a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), and an erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), both in combination with a distributed Raman amplifier (DRA).
