Marked floral zygomorphy and a reduced number of petals and/or stamens are the character traits that distinguish the taxa described (species of Afzelia, Berlinia, Gilbertiodendron, Macrolobium, Neochevalierodendron, Paramacrolobium, Phyllocarpus, and Tetraberlinia).
