Abstract Evolutionary ecology has reached the point where it has clarified the interplay between adaptation and constraint, at least in principle and for the kinds of traits it deals of traits with. This clarification has shifted interest to the evolution of the boundary conditions on optimization problems. It turns out that these boundary conditions are lineage-specific constraints.
