We present Community Connect, a custom social media platform for conducting controlled experiments of human behavior. The key distinguishing factor of Community Connect is the ability to control the visibility of user posts based on the groups they belong to, allowing careful and controlled investigation into how information propagates through a social network. We release this platform as a resource to the broader community, to facilitate research on data collected through controlled…

The rise of social media
Size Matters: Digital Social Networks and Language Change
The article presents two computational methods that can handle large and messy social media data and render them usable for analyzing networks, thus expanding the empirical and methodological basis from small-scale ethnographic observations and suggesting that network size plays a role.
Investigating Toxicity Across Multiple Reddit Communities, Users, and Moderators
This work presents their approach, which builds on state-of-the-art methods of toxic comment and toxicity trigger detection, and presents the research findings of investigating toxicity across users and moderators on Reddit.
Empirical Analysis of the Relation between Community Structure and Cascading Retweet Diffusion

Expanding Awareness: Comparing Location, Keyword, and Network Filtering Methods to Collect Hyperlocal Social Media Data
It is found that network filtering doubles the number of situational reports collected in real-time compared to location and keyword filtering alone, but that all three methods collect unique reports that can support situational awareness of incidents occurring across a community.
Sentiment analysis of multimodal twitter data
A multimodal sentiment analysis model is proposed to determine the sentiment polarity and score for any incoming tweet, i.e., textual, image or info-graphic and typographic, demonstrating that combining both textual and image features outperforms separate models that rely exclusively on either images or text analysis.
