M ANY PAPERS and programs have been written on the automated contouring of arbitrarily distributed data points, starting perhaps with Dayhoff (1963). There is even a reasonably large list of reviews of contouring techniques, While it is tempting to review the reviews, a more fruitful approach to evaluating alternative techniques appears to be that based on a breakdown of their methods and objectives into basic categories or stages (Gold, 1983) and an evaluation of their various properties.
