Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is marked by a very disappointing survival rate and still represents a clinical dilemma. According to the current pathogenic hypothesis, chronic damage of the alveolar epithelium is followed by abnormal tissue repair and impairment of the alveolar structure.
