This article looks at the ways that the commemoration of the seventeenth-century king Shivaji was instrumental in the development of public politics in the Marathi speaking region of western India. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, almost 200 years after his death, there was a growing interest in Shivaji. Shivaji's legacy was drafted for use in political debates; festivals were started to celebrate his legacy; and funds were raised to restore historic sites associated with his life… Expand
