The VirtualDesk metaphor is an opportunity for more comfortable and efficient immersive data exploration, using tangible interaction with the analyst's physical work desk and embodied manipulation of mid-air data representations. In this paper, we present an extended discussion of its underlying concepts, and review and compare two previous case studies where promising results were obtained in terms of user comfort, engagement, and usability. We also discuss findings of a novel study conducted…
Visualizing Movement Trajectories in an Immersive Space-Time Cube
The ever-growing amount of human movement data challenges us to develop new visualization techniques and to revisit existing ones with different perspectives. Traditional 2D movement visualizations
Evaluating an Immersive Space-Time Cube Geovisualization for Intuitive Trajectory Data Exploration
TLDR
The immersive version of the Space-Time Cube received higher usability scores, much higher user preference, and was rated to have a lower mental workload, without causing participants discomfort in 25-minute-long VR sessions.
Visualization, Interaction and Simulation Lab at UFRGS
TLDR
The VISLab research focus and the strategy it uses to achieve its main goal are presented, to enhance the human with computers, extending the perception capabilities, and improving the human power of action in a natural way.
Comparing and Combining Virtual Hand and Virtual Ray Pointer Interactions for Data Manipulation in Immersive Analytics
In this work, we evaluate two standard interaction techniques for Immersive Analytics environments: virtual hands, with actions such as grabbing and stretching, and virtual ray pointers, with actions
Extended Reality for Knowledge Work in Everyday Environments
TLDR
This chapter summarizes the state of the art in the field of extended reality for knowledge work in everyday environments and proposes steps to address the open challenges.
Cross Virtuality Analytics in Materials Sciences
In materials science, meaningful and intuitive visualization and interaction are of utmost importance for the detailed analysis and characterization of complex material systems through
Towards an Understanding of Augmented Reality Extensions for Existing 3D Data Analysis Tools
TLDR
The goal is to allow researchers to integrate stereoscopic AR-based visual representations and interaction techniques into their tools, and thus ultimately to increase the adoption of modern immersive analytics techniques in existing data analysis workflows.
Immersive Analytics of Multidimensional Volumetric Data
TLDR
Novel immersive visualization and interaction techniques using Virtual Reality (VR) were developed in this thesis to investigate highly complex, heterogeneous material systems and present a novel technique called "Model in Miniature" for an effective and interactive exploration and visual analysis of fiber characteristics.
Off-The-Shelf Stylus: Using XR Devices for Handwriting and Sketching on Physically Aligned Virtual Surfaces
TLDR
The OTSS framework is introduced, a framework for 2D interaction (in 3D) as well as for handwriting and sketching with digital pen, ink, and paper on physically aligned virtual surfaces in Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed Reality (VR, AR, MR: XR for short).

Immersive Analytics
TLDR
The focus in this position paper is on bringing attention to the higher-level usability and design issues in creating effective user interfaces for data analytics in immersive environments.
VirtualDesk: A Comfortable and Efficient Immersive Information Visualization Approach
TLDR
This work implements and evaluates an alternative data exploration metaphor where the user remains seated and viewpoint change is only realisable through physical movements, and demonstrates that the prototype setup, named VirtualDesk, presents excellent results regarding user comfort and immersion, and performs equally or better in all analytical tasks.
Remain seated: towards fully-immersive desktop VR
In this work we describe the scenario of fully-immersive desktop VR, which serves the overall goal to seamlessly integrate with existing workflows and workplaces of data analysts and researchers,
The Hologram in My Hand: How Effective is Interactive Exploration of 3D Visualizations in Immersive Tangible Augmented Reality?
TLDR
A controlled user study comparing three visualization environments for common 3D exploration of an augmented-reality head-mounted display, a handheld tablet, and a desktop setup shows that the desktop environment is still fastest and most precise in almost all cases.
Visualization beyond the Desktop--the Next Big Thing
TLDR
The next big thing is multisensory visualization that goes beyond the desktop, and visualization researchers need to develop and adapt to today's new devices and tomorrow's technology.
Immersive Visualization of Abstract Information: An Evaluation on Dimensionally-Reduced Data Scatterplots
TLDR
The immersive condition, however, was found to require less effort to find information and less navigation, besides providing much larger subjective perception of accuracy and engagement, resulting in overall performance benefits in both desktop and HMD-based 3D techniques.
The Vive Controllers vs. Leap Motion for Interactions in Virtual Environments: A Comparative Evaluation
TLDR
Results of a user study focusing on manipulation tasks, namely Walking box and blocks, Block tower and Numbered cubes tasks, show a general preference for the Vive Controllers, but also highlight that further work is needed to simplify complex tasks.
Design space for spatio-data coordination: Tangible interaction devices for immersive information visualisation
TLDR
This work defines a design space and demonstrates it with sketches and early prototypes of three exemplar devices for SD coordinated interaction to inform the design of interaction devices to allow for SD coordination.
The Experience of Presence: Factor Analytic Insights
TLDR
Within an embodied cognition framework, it is argued that presence in a virtual environment (VE) develops from the construction of a spatial-functional mental model of the VE, and that the conscious sense of presence reflects these two components as spatial presence and involvement.
The space-time cube as part of a GeoVisual analytics environment to support the understanding of movement data
TLDR
The comparison of both groups showed that domain experts were able to operate the visual analytical environment more effectively and efficiently due to their interest to explore their data.
