A novel two‐stage bioreactor has been designed for a combined submerged (SF) and solid substrate fermentation (SSF) of wheat straw. The straw was pretreated with steam, and cellulases from the culture fluid of Trichoderma reesei were adsorbed on it for increased bioconvertibility. SSF was conducted in the top part of the bioreactor by inoculating the straw with a 36‐h mycelial culture of T. reesei, or Coriolus versicolor. In the bottom part of the fermenter, Endomycopsis fibuliger was grown in…
Potential Role of Sequential Solid-State and Submerged-Liquid Fermentations in a Circular Bioeconomy
An efficient processing of organic solid residues will be pivotal in the development of the circular bioeconomy. Due to their composition, such residues comprise a great biochemical conversion
Solid substrate fermentation: a biotechnological approach to bioconversion of wastes
TLDR
In SSF the moist water-insoluble solid substrate is fermented by microorganisms in the absence or near-absence of free water, resulting in semisolid or solid fermentation systems.

TLDR
The relevance of applying SSF technology in the production of mycotoxins, biofuels, and biocontrol agents is discussed, and the need for adopting SSFtechnology in bioremediation of toxic compounds, biological detoxication of agro-industrial residues, andBiotransformation of agri-products and residues is emphasized.

Solid-State Fermentation Technology for Bioconversion of Biomass and Agricultural Residues
TLDR
In this chapter some important aspects of solid-state cultivation system have been discussed, including the variety of substrates and microorganisms used in SSF for the production of various end products; and the performance control of system by regulation of important factors.
Inhibition of microbial growth and metabolism by excess turbulence.
TLDR
Turbohypobiosis was characterized by a stress factor F(str) expressing the interaction of medium flow with microbial cells in local turbulent zones, dependent on the energy distribution of the stirring regime, which inhibited microbial growth and metabolism in stirred tank bioreactors.
