Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (that includes emphysema) results in significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is also a chronic and progressive parenchymal lung disease with an average survival of less than 5 years after diagnosis.
