}OBJECTIVE
The authors tested whether decisions about incongruencies in the representation and processing of semantic knowledge, thought to be related to cognitive control, are selectively impaired in schizophrenia.
METHOD
Twenty-four patients with schizophrenia and 24 healthy comparison subjects determined the relative size of paired stimuli as they are in the real world. Stimuli were words or images. Real-world "distance" (size difference between stimuli) was manipulated within pairs, as was…

When asked to consciously retrieve word lists, individuals with schizophrenia showed impairment not only in item-specific memory but also in gist memory, consistent with the storage deficit view of semantic memory in schizophrenia.

Genetics and Function of Neocortical GABAergic Interneurons in Neurodevelopmental Disorders
- Psychology, BiologyNeural plasticity

The characteristics that underlie the great diversity of cortical GABAergic interneurons are summarized and how the multiple roles of these cells in developing and mature circuits might contribute to the aforementioned disorders are explored.

The findings confirmed several of the predictions and were consistent with the hypothesis that abnormal Stroop performance in schizophrenia reflects a failure to adequately attend to the task-appropriate stimulus dimension (color).

- Psychology, BiologyProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America
- 1997
The findings suggest that it is selection, not retrieval, of semantic knowledge that drives activity in the left IFG, and counters the argument that the effects of selection can be attributed solely to variations in degree of semantic retrieval.
Rostral anterior cingulate cortex dysfunction during error processing in schizophrenia.

There may be a disturbed affective or motivational response to the commission of errors in schizophrenia, in light of the role of the rostral ACC and other limbic structures in mediating affective and motivational behaviour.
