Objective: The purpose of this studywas to investigate the effect of coenzymeQ10 supplementation on oxidative stress and antioxidant enzyme activity in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Methods: This was an intervention study. Patients who were identified by cardiac catheterization as having at least 50% stenosis of one major coronary artery or receiving percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (n 1⁄4 51) were randomly assigned to the placebo group (n 1⁄4 14) or one of the two…

Figures and Tables from this paper

Coenzyme Q10 prevents oxidative stress and fibrosis in isoprenaline induced cardiac remodeling in aged rats

TLDR
Evidence is provided that CoQ10 may prevent the development of cardiac remodeling, and fibrosis in ISO administered rats and significantly improved the oxidative stresses in ISO treated rats.

Levels of sP-selectin and hs-CRP Decrease with Dietary Intervention with Selenium and Coenzyme Q10 Combined: A Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Clinical Trial

TLDR
CRP and sP-selectin showed significant changes reflecting effects on inflammation and atherosclerosis in those given selenium and coenzyme Q10 combined, and a reduced cardiovascular mortality could be demonstrated in the active group, irrespective of biomarker level.

The effect of Ubiquinone administration on oxidative DNA damage and repair in plasma levels in non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy

TLDR
An increase of 8-OHdG in the baseline determination to patients with NPDR suggesting DNA damage with the repairing enzyme trying to compensate for oxidative damage is observed, suggesting the CoQ10 supplementation could diminish the oxidative DNA damage in N PDR.

Discovering the Potential Value of Coenzyme Q10 in Oxidative Stress: Enlightenment From a Synthesis of Clinical Evidence Based on Various Population

TLDR
CoQ10 can improve OS as indicated by statistical significance in CAT and MDA concentrations, as well as SOD activity, according to a random-effects model.

Coenzyme Q 10 Therapy

TLDR
CoQ 10 deficiencies are due to autosomal recessive mutations, mitochondrial diseases, aging-related oxidative stress and carcinogenesis processes, and also statin treatment, and many neurodegenerative disorders, diabetes, cancer, and muscular and cardiovascular diseases have been associated with low CoQ 10 levels.

CoQ10 and L-carnitine attenuate the effect of high LDL and oxidized LDL on spermatogenesis in male rats.

TLDR
Overall, pretreatment with coenzyme Q10 and L-Carnitine attenuated the destructive effects of high LDL and oxidized LDL levels on spermatogenesis parameters in male rats.

Coenzyme Q 10 Alleviated Behavioral Dysfunction and Bioenergetic Function in an Animal Model of Depression

TLDR
The findings revealed that behavioral abnormalities due to STZ target mitochondria and affect energy metabolism and hemostasis, resulting in the initiation of oxidative damage in the brain, could be reversed by 4-week administration of CoQ10.

Diabetes, Age, and Duration of Supplementation Subgroup Analysis for the Effect of Coenzyme Q10 on Oxidative Stress: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

TLDR
These supplements have positive effects on antioxidant defense against oxidizing agents and elevate antioxidant enzyme levels in the body, however, due to limited research the results should be taken with caution.

Coenzyme Q10 Alleviated Behavioral Dysfunction and Bioenergetic Function in an Animal Model of Depression

TLDR
Results revealed that behavioral abnormalities due to STZ target mitochondria and affect energy metabolism and hemostasis, resulting in the initiation of oxidative damage in the brain, could reverse the depressive like behavior and bioenergetic effects of STZ in the treated groups.

Coenzyme Q10 Therapy

TLDR
Oral administration of CoQ10 is a frequent antioxidant strategy in many diseases that may provide a significant symptomatic benefit and new formulations have been developed that increase CoQ 10 absorption and tissue distribution.

Effect of coenzyme Q10 administration on endothelial function and extracellular superoxide dismutase in patients with ischaemic heart disease: a double-blind, randomized controlled study.

TLDR
Improvements in the ED relaxation and endothelium-bound ecSOD activity might be related to CoQ(10) capability of enhancing endothelial functionality by counteracting nitric oxide oxidation.

Dose-related decrease of serum coenzyme Q10 during treatment with HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors.

Coenzyme Q10 concentrations in coronary artery disease.

Correlation of antioxidants with lipid peroxidation and lipid profile in patients suffering from coronary artery disease

TLDR
The study establishes that the levels of superoxide dismutase and catalase are increased in the initial stages of coronary arteries disease to protect and prevent lipid peroxidation and both have therapeutic targets to act against reactive oxygen species in coronary artery disease but the levels are decreased thereafter with the severity of disease.

Randomized, Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Trial of Coenzyme Q10 in Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction

TLDR
It is suggested that coenzyme Q10 can provide rapid protective effects in patients with AMI if administered within 3 days of the onset of symptoms, and the antioxidants vitamin A, E, and C and beta-carotene, which were lower initially after AMI, increased more in the coen enzyme Q10 group than in the placebo group.

Ubiquinone (coenzyme Q10) in the long-term treatment of idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy.

TLDR
Chronic treatment with ubiquinone had no influence on haemodynamic parameters, electrocardiogram, incidence of ventricular arrhythmias or on exercise tolerance, and it was therefore impossible to demonstrate any therapeutic effect of ubiquin one in patients suffering from idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy.

Coenzyme Q10 supplementation and heart failure.

TLDR
There is evidence to support the therapeutic value of CoQ10 as an adjunct to standard medical therapy in congestive heart failure, however, much further research is required, especially in the use of state-of-the-art techniques to assess functional outcomes in patients with congestiveheart failure.

Plasma ubiquinol-10 is decreased in patients with hyperlipidaemia.

TLDR
It appears that levels of coenzyme Q10 are decreased during therapy with HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, gemfibrozil, Adriamycin, and certain beta blockers, but because of its low toxicity it may be appropriate to recommend coen enzyme Q10 to select patients as an adjunct to conventional treatment.
