The species-specific diversity of codon usage in five eukaryotes (Schizosaccharomyces pombe, Caenorhabditis elegans, Drosophila melanogaster, Xenopus laevis, and Homo sapiens) was investigated with principal component analysis. Optimal codons for translation were predicted on the basis of tRNA-gene copy numbers.
