BACKGROUND We examined the covarying patterns of physical activity and sedentary behaviors among adolescents and their long-term maintenance. METHODS Data came from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (1995-2002). We used latent class analysis to identify distinct covarying patterns in adolescence. Logistic regression models were used to predict odds of meeting moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) recommendations (> or = 5 bouts/week) and exceeding screen time…
Patterns of movement behaviors and their association with overweight and obesity in youth
TLDR
Public health interventions targeting youth subgroups at increased risk of overweight and obesity through integrated approaches accounting for multiple movement behaviors should be considered, especially for females.

The clustering of diet, physical activity and sedentary behavior in children and adolescents: a review
TLDR
The review of studies using empirical, data-driven methodologies to identify clusters of diet, PA and sedentary behavior among children or adolescents and their associations with socio-demographic indicators, and overweight and obesity suggests that obesogenic cluster patterns are complex with a mixed PA/sedentary behavior cluster observed most frequently, but healthy and unhealthy patterning of all three behaviors was also reported.
Cardiometabolic Correlates of Physical Activity and Sedentary Patterns in U.S. Youth
TLDR
Associations between day-to-day physical activity and sedentary behavior latent classes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in U.S. youth are examined to show some indication that patterns, in addition to the total amount of physicalActivity and Sedentary behavior, may be important for cardiovascular health in youth.
Adolescent Physical Education Class Participation as a Predictor for Adult Physical Activity.
TLDR
High school PE participation did not prevent declining PA from adolescence to young adulthood, and overall, MVPA decreased over the 12 years.
How physical activity, diet, and sedentary behavior cluster according to age in adolescents?
TLDR
Physical activity, diet, and sedentary behavior clusters according to age groups and its association with sex and maternal education are examined and boys were more likely to be in the Actives; as against girls in All-day sitters, Inactive 1 and 2 clusters.
Profiles of children’s physical activity and sedentary behaviour between age 6 and 9: a latent profile and transition analysis
TLDR
This paper is the first to apply latent profile analysis to the physical activity of UK children as they move through primary school and identifies profiles of children based on the complex relationship between physical activity and sedentary time at ages 6 and 9.
National youth sedentary behavior and physical activity daily patterns using latent class analysis applied to accelerometry
TLDR
The models supported patterns for average intensity, sedentary behavior, light activity, MVPA, and vigorous activity and can be used in other youth studies to explore correlates or outcomes and to target sedentarybehavior or physical activity interventions.
Predictors of physical activity and sedentary behaviours among 11-16 year olds: Multilevel analysis of the 2013 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study in Wales
TLDR
Extending lunch breaks could have a positive impact on sedentary behaviour through the provision of more time for physical activity and the findings suggest that active travel could offer a mechanism for increasing physical activity levels particularly amongst girls.
Activity Profiles and the Associations With Weight Status in Population Studies of Young Children: Are There Gender Differences?
TLDR
This study suggests that self- and parental-reported data can identify meaningful activity profiles for boys, which are predictive of weight changes over time, and future research should consider potential gender differences in self-and parental- reported PA and SB variables.

Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior Patterns Are Associated With Selected Adolescent Health Risk Behaviors
TLDR
Examining relationships between PA and sedentary behavior patterns and an array of risk behaviors found participation in a range of PA-related behaviors, particularly those characterized by high parental sports/exercise involvement, was associated with favorable adolescent risk profiles.
Clustering of Sedentary Behaviors and Physical Activity Among Youth: A Cross-National Study
TLDR
Cluster analysis identified three groups of young people, differentiated by the level and type of sedentary behavior and physical activity, which suggest youth sedentariness is multifaceted and cannot be represented accurately by any one behavior such as TV viewing.
Ethnic differences in physical activity and inactivity patterns and overweight status.
TLDR
Predicted probabilities generated from the logistic regression models, which examined the experimental effects of altering hours of TV/video viewing and bouts of moderate to vigorous physical activity, show lower overweight among adolescents who watched less TV per week combined with frequent moderate to robust physical activity than those who watched more TV per month combined with fewer bouts of weekly moderate to vigorously physical activity.
Physical and sedentary activity in school children grades 5-8: the Bogalusa Heart Study.
TLDR
Overall, boys were more physically active than girls and engaged in more heavy physical activity, while girls reported a larger percentage of time spent in light and moderate physical activities.
Is physical activity differentially associated with different types of sedentary pursuits?
TLDR
Physical activity was not inversely associated with watching television or playing video games, but was positively associated with productive sedentary behavior and part-time work.
Effects of persistent physical activity and inactivity on coronary risk factors in children and young adults. The Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study.
TLDR
The authors conclude that the level of physical activity tracks significantly from adolescence to young adulthood, and subjects who are constantly inactive express a less beneficial coronary risk profile compared with those who are continuously active.
Physical activity patterns in American high school students. Results from the 1990 Youth Risk Behavior Survey.
TLDR
Students appear to spend considerably more time watching television than participating in physical activity, and participation in physical education and physical education class time devoted to physical activity are substantially below the goals set in Healthy People 2000.
