Calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs) are the cornerstone of immunosuppression after transplantation but can exert negative effects on chronic allograft function and metabolic profile. Belatacept, a selective co-stimulation blocker of T cells, is the first biologic agent approved for maintenance immunosuppression in kidney transplantation.
