This paper presents four-color narrowband photometry of clusters A115 (z = 0.191) and A2283 (z = 0.182) in order to follow the star formation history of various galaxy types. Although located at similar redshifts, the two clusters display very different fractions of blue galaxies (i.e., the Butcher-Oemler effect; fB = 0.13 for A115, fB = 0.30 for A2283). A system of photometric classification is applied to the cluster members that divides the cluster population into four classes based on their…
Cluster Populations in Abell 2125 and 2218
We combine new narrowband photometry with archival Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) data for A2218 (z = 0.18) and A2125 (z = 0.25), two clusters with intermediate redshifts but very different
Age and Metallicities of Cluster Galaxies: A1185 and Coma
We present age and metallicity determinations based on narrowband continuum colors for the galaxies in the rich clusters A1185 and Coma. Using a new technique to extract luminosity-weighted age and
We present a detailed comparison of structural properties in the rest-frame V band of cluster and field galaxies, selected and analyzed in the same manner, to test the hypothesis that much of the
The Color-Magnitude Relation in Coma: Clues to the Age and Metallicity of Cluster Populations
We have observed three fields of the Coma Cluster of galaxies with a narrowband (modified Stromgren) filter system. Observed galaxies include 31 in the vicinity of NGC 4889, 48 near NGC 4874, and 60
The dynamical status of the galaxy cluster Abell 115
Aims. We present the results of a new spectroscopic and photometric survey of the hot, binary X‐ray cluster A115 at z = 0.193, containing a radio relic. Methods. Our analysis is based on new
Strömgren Photometry from z = 0 to z ≈ 1. I. The Method
We use rest-frame Stromgren photometry to observe clusters of galaxies in a self-consistent manner from z = 0 to z = 0.8. Stromgren photometry of galaxies is intended as a compromise between standard
Ages and Metallicities of Fornax Dwarf Elliptical Galaxies
Narrowband photometry is presented on 27 dwarf ellipticals in the Fornax cluster. Calibrated with Galactic globular cluster data and spectrophotometric population models, the colors indicated that
The First Hour of Extragalactic Data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Spectroscopic Commissioning: The Coma Cluster
On 1999 May 26, one of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) fiber-fed spectrographs saw astronomical first light. This was followed by the first spectroscopic commissioning run during the dark period
The Age of Ellipticals and the Color-Magnitude Relation
Using new narrowband color observations of early-type galaxies in clusters, we reconstruct the color-magnitude relation (CMR) with a higher degree of accuracy than previous work. We then use the
Stellar populations of massive elliptical galaxies in very rich clusters
We present a detailed stellar population analysis of 27 massive elliptical galaxies within four very rich clusters at redshift z ∼ 0.2: A115, A655, A963 and A2111. Using the new, high-resolution

The Butcher-Oemler Effect in Abell 2317
This paper presents deep narrowband photometry of the cluster A2317 (z = 0.211) carried out using the KPNO 4 m and Steward 2.3 m telescopes. Using rest frame Stromgren photometry, it is determined
Color evolution from z = 0 to z = 1
Rest frame Stroemgren photometry (3500 A, 4100 A, 4750 A, and 5500 A) is presented for 509 galaxies in 17 rich clusters between z = 0 and z = 1 as a test of color evolution. Our observations confirm
A statistical analysis of the galaxy populations of distant luminous X-ray clusters
We present a deep, multicolour (UBI) CCD survey using the Palomar 5-m telescope of a sample of high X-ray luminosity, distant clusters selected from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. The 10 clusters lie in
A Spectroscopic catalog of 10 distant rich clusters of galaxies
We present spectroscopic observations of galaxies in the fields of 10 distant clusters for which we have previously presented deep imaging with WFPC2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope. The clusters
The Morphology of Distant Cluster Galaxies. II. HST Observations of Four Rich Clusters at z ≃ 0.4*
We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WF/PC and WFPC2 observations of four rich clusters of galaxies at redshifts z ~ 0.4: CL 1447+2619, CL 0939+4713, CL 0024+1654, and Abell 370. Extensive
The Star Formation Histories of Galaxies in Distant Clusters
We present a detailed analysis of the spectroscopic catalog of galaxies in 10 distant clusters from Dressler et al. We investigate the nature of the different spectral classes defined by Dressler et
X-ray shapes of distant clusters and blue galaxy fractions
Based on ROSAT PSPC pointed observations, we have determined the aggregate X-ray shapes of 10 distant (z = 0.17-0.54) rich clusters: A2397, A222, A520, A1689, A223B, A1758, A2218, A2111, A2125, and
A new approach to the use of narrow-band filters in extragalactic research is described. The photometric system vz, bz, yz essentially imitates, at the redshift of the cluster of galaxies in
Metallicity gradients in early-type galaxies
A study of medium-to-bright early-type galaxies in six bandpasses from 3500 A to 2.2 microns is presented in order to quantify their colors and color gradients and relate these to metallicity and
Compact Nuclei in Moderately Redshifted Galaxies
The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 is being used to obtain high-resolution images (?015 FWHM) in the V (F606W) and I (F814W) bands for several thousand distant galaxies as
