Distribution pattern of dugongs is a key component for space-based managements. Vocal interaction of dugongs may result in a distinctive distribution pattern. This study described the distribution patterns of vocalising dugongs, solitary and cow-calf pairs of dugongs. Total of 31 hours and 24 minutes of aerial surveys over southern Thai waters were conducted to observe distribution of the dugongs in 2006, 2008 and 2010. We also conducted towed acoustic surveys to observe the distribution of… Expand

Differences in Vocalisation Patterns of Dugongs Between Fine-Scale Habitats Around Talibong Island, Thailand
Examining characteristics of a species’ fine-scale habitat use contributes to effective and practical spatially explicit conservation. Dugongs (Dugong dugon) are endangered herbivorous mammals thatExpand
Effects of environmental factors on vocalization pattern of dugongs revealed by generalized linear model
To quantitatively examine the complex environmental factors affecting acoustical behavior on marine mammals like dugongs, a combination of passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) and statistical modelingExpand
Does Boat Noise Affect Dugong (Dugong dugon) Vocalization?
In recent decades, human activities in coastal areas have increased worldwide. Activities such as coastal develop ment, vessel traffic, and excessive fishing have altered the marine environment inExpand
Automated Classification of Dugong Calls and Tonal Noise by Combining Contour and MFCC Features
TLDR
A classification method was developed for dugong tonal vocalisations and similar tonal noises by combining contour and MFCC features and can extend the spatial and temporal scale of acoustic monitoring of the endangered dugong. Expand

Stability of Call Sequence in Dugongs' Vocalization
TLDR
The objective of this study is to classify the vocalization patterns of dugong calls and discuss the stability call sequences within and across local populations of dugongs, and to analyze the underwater sound data set obtained in both animals in different environment and populations. Expand
Detection probability of vocalizing dugongs during playback of conspecific calls.
Dugongs (Dugong dugon) were monitored using simultaneous passive acoustic methods and visual observations in Thai waters during January 2008. Chirp and trill calls were detected by a towed stereoExpand
The acoustical characteristics of dugong calls and the behavioral correlates observed in Toba aquarium
Dugongs, Dugong dugon, are listed as Vulnerable to extinction in IUCN Red List. Previous reports suggested that there were some correlation between the behavior and the acoustical characteristics ofExpand
Dugong (Dugong dugon) vocalization patterns recorded by automatic underwater sound monitoring systems.
TLDR
To quantitatively examine the diurnal, or tidal, effects on dugong behavior, passive acoustic observation techniques were employed to monitor the animals and calculated bearings of the sound sources were used as an indicator to track the relative numbers of dugongs during the monitoring periods. Acoustic Signals of Solitary Dugongs: Physical Characteristics and Behavioral Correlates
We describe frequency and amplitude patterns of sounds produced by individually identifiable wild dugongs ( Dugong dugon ) in Shark Bay, Western Australia. Chirp-squeaks, barks, trills, and soundsExpand
Callback response of dugongs to conspecific chirp playbacks.
TLDR
The results show that dugongs vocalize to playbacks of frequency-modulated signals and suggest that the source level of dugong chirps may be manipulated to compensate for transmission loss between the source and receiver. Expand
ASPECTS OF UNDERWATER SOUND COMMUNICATION IN FLORIDA MANATEES (TRICHECHUS MANATUS LATIROSTRIS)
TLDR
Structural complexity in the calls of manatees is similar to that in other sirenians, and may reflect their auditory capabilities and the unique physical properties of sound in shallow water. Expand
Feeding behavior of wild dugongs monitored by a passive acoustical method.
TLDR
This study achieved the first successful feeding sound monitoring in a seagrass area using a full-band underwater recording system (called automatic underwater sound monitoring system for dugong: AUSOMS-D). Expand
Signature information and individual recognition in the isolation calls of Amazonian manatees, Trichechus inunguis (Mammalia: Sirenia)
TLDR
Individual recognition by Amazonian manatees according to their vocal patterns is suggested through a preliminary playback experiment, indicating that individuals can be separated on the basis of variables related to the fundamental frequency and signal duration. Expand
DUGONG (DUGONG DUGON) ABUNDANCE ALONG THE ANDAMAN COAST OF THAILAND
In 2000 and 2001, dugong abundance was estimated using aerial surveys in three provinces along the Andaman coast of Thailand. A microlite aircraft was used to fly aerial transects over seagrassExpand
