The spruce-fir [Picea rubens Sarg.-Abies fraseri (Pursh) Poir.] forests of the southern Appalachian Mountains are considered refugial, endangered communities that exist on only seven mountaintop areas in Virginia and North Carolina, USA. These relict forests continue to be threatened by stress factors such as logging, acid rain deposition, attacks from invasive insects, and climate change.
