Papillary thyroid carcinoma usually presents as a multifocal disease; and tumors often recur in the contralateral thyroid lobe, raising questions concerning their clonal origins. The clonality of tumors appearing simultaneously in both lobes or recurring in the contralateral lobe remains unknown.
