Patients with splenomegaly may come to medical attention for a variety of reasons. However, patients with no obvious explanation for an enlarged spleen present a difficult diagnostic problem. A detailed history taking, appropriate clinical examination and relevant investigations is tool for a diagnosis of splenomegaly. Appropriate investigations in most patients with undiagnosed splenomegaly will yield a diagnosis. Patients with undiagnosed splenomegaly, who are otherwise well and who have no…

Splenomegaly. When and how to treat.
TLDR
Appropriate therapy covers a broad range, from doing nothing more than periodic follow-up to laparotomy with splenectomy, depending upon the factors involved in the individual case.
Splenomegaly. An algorithmic approach to diagnosis.
TLDR
The algorithms herein attempt to present a rational, stepby-step diagnostic approach to the causes of splenomegaly in the rough order of their frequency, and they stress clues from the history, physical examination, and routine laboratory test results.
REDEFINING THE ROLE OF SPLENECTOMY IN PATIENTS WITH IDIOPATHIC SPLENOMEGALY
TLDR
The role of diagnostic splenectomy in the current era is found to be the same as previous studies, which found it necessary for diagnosis in certain situations.
Splenectomy in patients with undiagnosed splenomegaly.
Of splenectomies performed in the Cork Regional Hospital over an 11 year period, ten were undertaken primarily for diagnostic purposes. A definitive histological diagnosis was established in nine
Nontropical idiopathic splenomegaly.
TLDR
The clinical, hematologic, and pathologic findings are characteristic of nontropical idiopathic splenomegaly, or Dacie's syndrome, and in 20% of the 46 cases described in the literature, malignant lymphoma has subsequently developed.
The spleen as a diagnostic specimen
TLDR
Clinical intent with preoperative clinical and radiologic studies and histologic findings in an assessment of the diagnostic yield of splenectomy are correlated.
‘Non‐Tropical Idiopathic Splenomegaly’ (‘Primary Hypersplenism’): A Review of Ten Cases and their Relationship to Malignant Lymphomas
TLDR
The spleen was grossly enlarged in all 10 patients and the liver was palpable in seven but there was no evidence of cirrhosis or portal hypertension.
Does This Patient Have Splenomegaly
TLDR
The spleen is examined to see whether it is palpable, and among the differential diagnoses you consider a lymphoproliferative disorder and decide to examine her for splenomegaly.
A study on tropical splenomegaly syndrome and chloroquine prophylaxis.
TLDR
Sixty-nine per cent of cases showed a distinct clinical and biochemical improvement after chloroquine chemoprophylaxis, and though a malarial origin in the development of TSS is favoured its precise aetiology is as yet speculative.
