Estuaries may be subject to warming due to global climate change but few studies have considered the drivers or seasonality of warming empirically. We analyzed temperature trends and rates of temperature change over time for the Hudson River estuary using long-term data, mainly from daily measures taken at the Poughkeepsie Water Treatment Facility. This temperature record is among the longest in the world for a river or estuary. The Hudson River has warmed 0.945 °C since 1946. Many of the…

Long-Term Warming And The Size And Phenology Of Long Island Sound Plankton
Few coastal systems have time series data that allow researchers to examine the impact of two important stressors on estuarine ecosystems: climate change and eutrophication. The Central Basin of Long
Rising air and stream-water temperatures in Chesapeake Bay region, USA
Monthly mean air temperature (AT) at 85 sites and instantaneous stream-water temperature (WT) at 129 sites for 1960–2010 are examined for the mid-Atlantic region, USA. Temperature anomalies for two
Climate change rapidly warms and acidifies Australian estuaries
TLDR
The authors show that east Australian estuaries are warming and acidifying faster than predicted by ocean or atmospheric models; a trend that is magnified in shallow estuary.
Preliminary Evidence for the Amplification of Global Warming in Shallow, Intertidal Estuarine Waters
TLDR
Data is compiled from published literature, theses, and reports that suggest that enhanced warming may be occurring, perhaps at rates three times higher than deeper estuarine waters, in the shallow (<1 m), nearshore portions of northeastern U.S. estuaries.
Decadal-Scale Change in a Large-River Ecosystem
Like many large-river ecosystems, the Hudson River has been changing rapidly, chiefly as a result of human activities. Many of these changes take place on a decadal timescale, longer than the
Organic carbon patterns and budgets in the Long Island Sound estuary
A multi-year observational time series was evaluated across the 150 km central axis of the U.S. east coast's Long Island Sound (LIS) estuary, in three distinct regions. Fluxes were calculated at the
Warming increases carbon and nutrient fluxes from sediments in streams across land use
Rising water temperatures due to climate and land use change can accelerate biogeochemical fluxes from sediments to streams. We investigated impacts of increased streamwater temperatures on sediment

TLDR
Gross long-term temperature variability in the estuary was consistent with North Atlantic climate variability associated with the prolonged positive North Atlantic O oscillation/Arctic Oscillation and increased anthropogenic radiative forcing, although localized environmental drivers likely are important as well.
