Climate Variability and Chum Salmon Production in the North Pacific

title={Climate Variability and Chum Salmon Production in the North Pacific},
author={Suam Kim and Sukyung K. Kang and H. Seo and Eun Jung Kim and Minho Kang},
The relationship between North Pacific chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) population and climate variability was investigated in the North Pacific ecosystem. Time-series for the Aleutian Low Pressure, Southern Oscillation, Arctic Oscillation, and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) indices dating back to 1950 are compared with the chum salmon catch using a cross-correlation function (CCF) and cumulative sum (CuSum) of anomalies. The results of CCF and CuSum analyses indicated that there was a major… Expand
Environmental variability and chum salmon production at the northwestern Pacific Ocean
Chum salmon, Oncorhynchus keta, are distributed widely in the North Pacific Ocean, and about 76% of chum salmon were caught from Russian, Japanese, and Korean waters of the northwestern Pacific OceanExpand
The Model for Assessing Links Between Ecosystems (MALBEC) is a policy gaming tool with potential to explore the impacts of climate change, harvest policies, hatchery policies, and freshwater habitatExpand
Magnitude and Trends in Abundance of Hatchery and Wild Pink Salmon, Chum Salmon, and Sockeye Salmon in the North Pacific Ocean
The large and increasing abundances of hatchery salmon have important management implications in terms of density-dependent processes and conservation of wild salmon populations; management agencies should improve estimates ofHatchery salmon abundance in harvests and on the spawning grounds. Expand
The relationship between fishing characteristics of Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) and ocean conditions around Jeju Island
Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) is one of the commercially important species in Korea as well as other countries of the North Pacific. Korean offshore large purse seine fisheries targetingExpand
Accounting for price responses in economic evaluation of climate impacts for a fishery
Abstract The present study evaluates the economic impacts of fluctuations in anchovy (Engraulis spp.) catch in Gyeong-Nam (GN) province, South Korea, arising due to warming seawater, accounting forExpand

Archeological evidence of Pacific salmon distribution in northern Japan and implications for future global warming
Abstract Archeological evidence of Pacific salmon in Hokkaido is reviewed and compared with results from western North America. Salmon remains have been found at 24 sites in Hokkaido from the EarlyExpand
The regime concept and natural trends in the production of Pacific salmon
Fluctuations in Pacific salmon abundance in this century were synchronous with large fluctuation in climate in the Pacific, suggesting that a common event may cause the regime shifts. Expand
Climate change and control of the southeastern Bering Sea pelagic ecosystem
It is predicted that pelagic ecosystem function in the southeastern Bering Sea will alternate between primarily bottom-up control in cold regimes and primarily top-down control in warm regimes, and the ability of large predatory fish populations to sustain fishing pressure will vary between warm and cold regimes. Expand
A Pacific Interdecadal Climate Oscillation with Impacts on Salmon Production
Evidence gleaned from the instrumental record of climate data identifies a robust, recurring pattern of ocean–atmosphere climate variability centered over the midlatitude North Pacific basin. OverExpand
Study of characteristic of feeding habitat of juvenile chum salmon and their food environment in the Pacific coastal waters, central part of Hokkaido [Japan]
.This study is to investigate the ecological characteristics of juvenile chum salmon and the behavior of zooplankton during spring and early summer in the Pacific coastal waters off the coast ofExpand
Results suggest that early sea mortality soon after release from hatcheries will determined a population level of returning adults of a cohort of chum salmon. Expand
The optimal stability `window': a mechanism underlying decadal fluctuations in North Pacific salmon stocks?
While recent evidence suggests that North Pacific salmon stocks are influenced by decadal variability in atmospheric forcing of the ocean, the actual combination of physical and biological processesExpand
Climate variability and its effects on major fisheries in Korea
Understanding in climate effects on marine ecosystem is essential to utilize, predict, and conserve marine living resources in the 21s t century. In this review paper, we summariz ed t h e pastExpand
Scale and Otolith Patterns Prove Growth History of Pacific Salmon
Scale and otolith patterns are frequently used for age determination, growth estimation, and stock identification of Pacific salmon. However, little information is available about their formationExpand
Interannual–interdecadal variations in zooplankton biomass, chlorophyll concentration and physical environment in the subarctic Pacific and Bering Sea
Interannual, decadal and interdecadal variations in summer plankton biomass during 1954–1994 in the whole subarctic Pacific and Bering Sea were compared among regions as well as with climatic andExpand
