Under present-day conditions, and particularly because of the statutory examination of all children of school age through the School Health Service. we can be certain that almost all cases of cleft lip and palate in Great Britain come to notice and are referred for surgical treatment. The exceptions are those infants who are stillborn or who die before being referred, but even of the latter a considerable proportion will find their way into hospital index systems.
